Does Telegram Notify You When a Message Is Deleted
Short answer
Telegram sends no notification about a deletion — neither to the person who deleted the message nor to the one it disappeared for: deleted messages leave no mark in the chat. But one checkmark means “delivered” and two mean “read”, so whoever deletes a message usually knows whether it was read first. The person it was deleted for learns nothing at all.
The question gets asked from both sides. One person wants to know whether something written in the heat of the moment was read. The other wants to know what was in the message that vanished from the chat.
The answer differs for private chats, groups and edits, so let’s go case by case. Along the way it becomes clear why checkmarks in Telegram don’t mean what they mean in WhatsApp.
Checkmarks: one and two
Telegram has only two states, and they are often confused with WhatsApp habits.
In Telegram:
- one checkmark — the message was delivered to the Telegram cloud and the recipient was notified;
- two checkmarks — the message was read: the person opened Telegram and opened that conversation.
The checkmarks themselves are blue — that’s the colour of the default theme. What matters is that they look blue in both cases, one or two. The colour doesn’t change depending on whether the message was read, so count the checkmarks instead of reading the shade. There is also no setting in Telegram that would turn read receipts off in private chats.
In WhatsApp it’s the opposite — colour is the signal:
- one grey tick — the message was sent;
- two grey ticks — delivered to the device, but not read yet;
- two blue ticks — read.
Hence the confusion. Someone used to WhatsApp looks for a colour change in Telegram and doesn’t find one: unread messages are blue there too. Someone used to Telegram sees two ticks in WhatsApp and assumes the message was read, when grey ticks only mean delivery.
One more difference: in WhatsApp read receipts can be switched off in privacy settings — then blue ticks never appear, but you stop seeing other people’s too. It doesn’t apply to group chats: there receipts are always sent.
This leads to something people rarely think about. If you delete your own message and see two checkmarks, it has already been read, and deleting changes nothing. If there is one checkmark, the message was delivered and is sitting in the chat, but the conversation hasn’t been opened yet.
What happens when a message is deleted
Telegram has two different actions, and they look different from the other side.
Delete for me. The message disappears from your chat only. It stays in place for the other person, who notices nothing — no notification, no change in the conversation.
Delete for everyone. The message disappears for both. And here’s a Telegram quirk: in a private chat you can delete for everyone not only your own message, but the other person’s as well, with no time limit. In groups you can’t — there everyone deletes only their own messages for everyone, while administrators can remove other people’s.
After deletion nothing is left in the chat. No grey “message deleted” placeholder like in some messengers, no gap, no trace in search.
What each side sees
Let’s lay it out by facts, without guesswork.
The person who deleted saw the checkmarks beforehand: one or two. So they know whether the message was read. They receive no notification about what happened next.
The person it was deleted for receives nothing. The message simply disappears. If it arrived while the phone was nearby, a system notification may still be sitting on the lock screen — but that is a notification about the message arriving, not about it being deleted, and it shows the text as it was when sent.
That is exactly why this question is asked from both sides: one wants to know whether the other person managed to read it, the other wants to know what was in the message that vanished.
Editing instead of deleting
Editing works differently, and it is the only case that leaves a trace.
If someone edits a message instead of deleting it, an “edited” label appears next to it. Both sides see it and it doesn’t go away. But Telegram shows only the fact of the edit: it neither stores nor displays the previous text. There is no way to see the earlier wording from the chat.
There is no notification about an edit either — the label appears silently.
Groups: read receipts do exist
Groups work in more detail than private chats.
In groups with fewer than 100 members the author of a message sees the list of people who read it — names and the time they did. The list lives for 7 days and is then erased, for the privacy of the members.
In groups of 100 members or more there is no such list at all — otherwise it would turn into a tool for tracking who was online and when.
Deletions in groups are just as quiet: the message disappears without a label, and nobody is notified.
Do deleted messages stay on Telegram’s servers
No — at least, they are not available to you under any circumstances. A deleted message cannot be restored through settings, a chat export or a support request. The export in Telegram Desktop saves what is in the chat right now; deleted messages are no longer there.
Any service promising to “recover a conversation by phone number” or asking for the code from an SMS is a scam. That code is enough to take over the account entirely.
What you can do on your side
The only approach that works is to keep a copy in advance, before anything is deleted.
